Union City was formerly known as Alvarado, after the name of the Mexican Governor, Juan Bautista Alvarado. It was founded by William and John Horner. John was California’s premier agriculturalist but started as a teacher. The city become known then by what it is called today, Union City. Sitting about 10 miles north of San Jose, 20 miles south of Oakland, and about 25 miles from San Francisco, Union City is a delightful town, which is probably why in 1999 they received the All America City award. About 66% of people employed here are blue-collar workers. This makes sense because the largest employer is a large wine distributor Southern Wine & Spirits. New Haven Unified School District and Wal- Mart come in next. Tech companies are largely removed from this area for more suitable real estate in the Peninsular region. Living in Union City is a little more affordable than other major Bay Area cities. The average home value is just $718,500, three times less than in Palo Alto.
