Welcome to the largest city in Silicon Valley. The Ohlone people inhabited this area for thousands of years until the Spanish formally named the city in 1777. Before Sacramento was the capital of California, San Jose was the capital and even held the first two sessions of the legislature. San Jose is also one of the most diverse cities in the world. Up until the 1970s, San Jose was over 90% caucasian. That number dropped to 62.8% in 1990 and in 2010 even further to 42.8%. Hispanics and Asians make up 33.2% and 32%, respectively. The move of the state capital to Sacramento hardly had a major impact on San Jose. We were mainly an agricultural producer for nearly 150 years until the end of WWII where many veterans ended up calling San Jose home. Coupled with the enormous influx of people in the 1990s due to the tech boom, San Jose quickly became a world-class city.
Silicon Valley has many superstars like Travis Kalanick, CEO and co-founder of UBER, and Marc Benioff, co-founder, and CEO of Salesforce bringing billions of dollars and thousands of jobs into the Valley. According to Zillow, a real estate and rental marketplace, in 2019 the median home value in San Jose is $991,200 or about $630 per square foot. Even with that high price homes generally, sell within about a week of listing. The Employment Development Department of California posts that the unemployment rate as of July 2019 is 2.8%. With its low unemployment rate, San Jose is currently a great place to find a job. The population as of July 2018 is over 1,030,000 according to the US Census Bureau. As posted on the San Jose Police Department website the total crime rate has decreased from 2018 to 2019 by roughly -2.4%. This drop in the crime rate is significant. The high schools in San Jose are among the best in California with 52% of students who graduate having already completed some UC/CSU required courses (California Department of Education).
