James Alexander Forbes built the Forbes Mill which was the starting point for the town of Los Gatos. The town was first named after the Forbes Mill but later when it was incorporated in 1887 it became Los Gatos named after the Los Gatos Creek which flows from the Santa Cruz mountains and feeds into the Guadalupe river all the way to the bay. During the turn of the 20th century, Los Gatos become the site for a few minor oil digging operations. The Los Gatos High School was built in 1920 and still operates today. The Forbes Mill is also still standing and is host to a history museum that always makes a fun day trip. Los Gatos rebuilt after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and has been a great place to live and work in the San Jose municipal area for over a century.

The population of Los Gatos is roughly 30,000 residents according to an estimate done in July 2018 by the US Census Bureau. Los Gatos is about 11 square miles in area and has a comfortable population density of 2,700 people per square mile. It is quite an educated town and more than 65% of the residents here have a bachelor’s degree or higher. If you are looking to buy a home in Los Gatos the median price for a home on the market, as of August 2019, is $2.1 million (Zillow, online real estate database). It is not the most expensive place to live in the Bay Area, and if you take the time you will find the right home for you. The weather is mild in Los Gatos. Averaging high temperatures in the summer around 85 degrees Fahrenheit and averaging high temperatures in winter around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. December through March is the rainy season averaging 7 days of rain per month (National Centers for Environmental Information, NOAA).
