Gilroy Movers

Gilroy is a prominent town in the greater Bay Area. Its early history dates back to when the Ohlone Indians, specifically the Amah Matsun Tribe, were hunting and gathering in this area. The first European settlers were the Spanish who, with an established military, built missions and forced the Native tribes into serving as laborers in the late 1700’s. John Gilroy was the first European not of Spanish descent to inhabit and live in this area, and he married the daughter of Mexican landowner Don Ortega. When Don passed away in 1833, the Mexican government granted John Gilroy a portion of the land that belonged to his father-in-law where John manufactured soap. John was appointed mayor of San Ysidro, the former name of the Gilroy area. In 1846, during the gold rush, he was granted the title of Justice of the Peace. Starting in the 1850’s Gilroy was a stagecoach and postal stop along the famous El Camino Real.
