Palo Alto
From a city whose name literally means “tall tree,” Palo Alto was once full of trees when the Native American Ohlones were settled here. In the late 1700s Palo Alto was established by the Spanish people. It wouldn’t be until 1876 that its most famous landmark, Stanford University, would officially begin operations and become one of the most prestigious ivy league schools in the world. Palo Alto has a per capita income of $119,124 and is one of the richest neighborhoods in the world. Many of the world’s most recognizable companies are headquartered in Palo Alto including Tesla Motors, Skype, Facebook, Logitech, Sun Microsystems, PayPal, and Pinterest. Stanford University employs about 10,000 people here while Facebook employees about 17,000. The time between 1950 and ’60, when the post-WWII industry boom brought thousands of workers from across the country to Palo Alto, the city grew 105.2% from 25,475 to 52,287. People are still moving to Palo Alto as each year sees increases in the number of people coming in. In 2010 the population was 64,403. In 2015 that number is estimated to have grown 3.8% to 66,853.
